About DVD+RW/+R
DVD+RW/+R is the leading format for consumers storing video,
music, images and data to DVD discs. The benefits of DVD+RW/+R include: the
capability of recording up to 4.7 gigabytes of digital video, images, music or
data -- this equates to the storage capacity of nearly seven CD-R/RW discs and
the potential to store thousands of digital photographs or approximately two
hours of digital video; two-way compatibility that allows DVD+RW and DVD+R discs
to be played in most DVD-video players and DVD-ROM drives in use today; and
support for write-once DVD+R capability, which protects information from being
accidentally changed or deleted.
How is DVD+RW related to
DVD-RAM and DVD-RW?
DVD+RW, DVD-RAM and DVD-RW are
all rewritable DVD formats, however, only DVD+RW is designed from the start to
be compatible with existing DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players, both on a
physical as well as a logical level. This means that a DVD+RW disc recorded in a
DVD+RW video recorder can be played in virtually all DVD-Video players or
DVD-ROM equiped PCs, and that any DVD+RW disc recorded with data on a PC DVD+RW
drive can be read by most DVD-ROM drives.
DVD+RW birth
DVD+RW was announced in 1997, but bringing the
standard to fruition took longer than anticipated. The original capacity in the
1997 spec was for 3.0GB discs, but delays in delivering products allowed the
companies to shift to a full 4.7GB per surface (which is the same capacity as
single-sided/single-layer data or video DVDs). Note that most DVD capacity specs
are listed as GB, when in fact they are referring to billions of bytes. We'll
just specify GB as do most sources to avoid even more confusion, with the
implicit assumption the reader knows it's really billions of bytes.

Industry support for
DVD+RW
Over 50 independent
software vendors and equipment manufacturers have pledged their support for
DVD+RW and announced software availability. With its 4.7 GB storage capacity, a
DVD+RW disc allows for seven times the storage capacity of a CD.
